ADAS in Maruti, Toyota SUVs: What you need to know!

Initially, the launch of the ADAS-equipped Grand Vitara and Hyryder was planned for the third quarter of 2023, but it has been delayed due to a chip shortage faced by Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM). However, it is now anticipated that these vehicles will be launched in the first quarter of the next financial year. To accommodate this technology, Toyota has reportedly placed significant orders for crucial electronic components like radar, sensors, and cameras.

The ADAS features are likely to be available in the top-tier variants of these vehicles, with a price increase ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 75,000. Maruti Suzuki is also in discussions with the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) for test trials of the ADAS technology at ICAT’s Manesar track. This ADAS Suite could come with Level 2 Features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Detection, and few more.

In terms of infotainment, both the Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser Hyryder features a 9-inch SmartPlay Pro touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also comes with Heads-Up Display (HUD), a 360 Degree camera, and Suzuki Connect with over 40 features, including Alexa Skill and smartwatch connectivity. The vehicles will come with a colored head-up display showing speed, fuel economy, and turn-by-turn navigation.

Safety is a key focus, with both models equipped with six airbags, hill hold assist, a tire pressure monitoring system, electronic stability management, and rear disc brakes. They will ride on 17-inch alloy wheels. Both the Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser Hyryder are powered by a strong hybrid powertrain developed by Toyota.

Additionally, Maruti offers 2 powertrains – 1.5 L 4 Cylinder Petrol engine producing 101.64 BHP and 136.8 NM of torque mated to 5 Speed Manual, and 6 Speed Automatic Gearbox. Then there is the 1.5 L 3 Cylinder Petrol Hybrid producing 91.18 BHP and 122 NM of torque paired to an eCVT Gearbox. The All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system will offer four driving modes: Auto, Sand, Snow, and Lock with Manual.

Maruti Suzuki, with its extensive dealer network, aims to introduce ADAS technology to a wider audience in India. As the largest carmaker in India, they are well-positioned to make this advanced safety tech more accessible to Indian families.
