Yamaha after unveiled the AMT Gearbox for motorcyles last month has now confirmed the MT-09 will be the first bike to get the AMT Gearbox by the end of this year.

Yamaha has confirmed that the MT-09 will be the first motorcycle to showcase their new Yamaha Automated Manual Transmission (Y-AMT) system. Announced just last month, the Y-AMT system simplifies gear shifting by eliminating the need for a traditional foot shifter. Instead, riders can manually control gear changes with thumb shifters.

How the Y-AMT System Works?

The Y-AMT system is designed with two actuators, removing the need for both a clutch lever and a shifter lever. Riders can choose to switch gears manually using thumb controls. The gearbox itself weighs just 2.8 kg and offers three modes:

• D (Automatic): For effortless, automatic gear changes.

• D+ (Performance-Focused Automatic): For a more dynamic riding experience.
• Manual: For full manual control via thumb shifters.

Yamaha MT-09 Specifications

The MT-09 is powered by a robust, liquid-cooled, 890cc, three-cylinder engine that delivers 119 hp at 10,000 rpm and 93 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. The engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox, available in both manual and Y-AMT variants. The Y-AMT variant has a kerb weight of 196 kg, slightly heavier than the 193 kg base model.

Advanced Features and Controls

The MT-09 Y-AMT boasts a fully adjustable USD fork and a monoshock with adjustable preload and rebound damping. Braking is handled by a 298mm dual disc setup at the front and a 245mm single disc at the rear. The bike also includes a suite of advanced riding aids, such as Traction control, ABS, Slide control, Wheelie control, Cruise control

Riders can switch between the three shifting modes using the switch gear on the right handlebar. Manual gear control is facilitated by a plus and minus toggle switch on the left switch cube, along with a seesaw-style gear lever.

Availability

The Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT will be available in Japan at the end of this year. However, its launch in India seems unlikely in the near future. Previously, Yamaha sold the MT-09 in India, but it was discontinued due to poor sales and limited brand awareness.
