Tata’s new SUV has been spotted in the close-to-production form revealing it staying true to its concept avatar!
Tata Motors is set to reintroduce the iconic Tata Sierra in an all-new avatar, offering both electric (EV) and internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrain options. The Sierra EV will launch first in the second half of 2025, followed by the ICE version, which is expected to debut within the 2026 financial year. This marks Tata’s continued focus on electrification while catering to traditional SUV enthusiasts.
Tata Sierra EV: Design, Features, and Platform
The Tata Sierra EV was first showcased as a concept at the 2020 Auto Expo and later in a production-ready form at the 2023 Auto Show. A recently leaked image gives a glimpse of the EV’s side profile, highlighting its signature floating roof design created by a thick B-pillar and blacked-out C-pillar. The “.ev” badging on the front passenger door confirms it as the electric variant.
The Sierra EV is expected to be based on Tata’s Gen2 EV platform, also known as Acti.EV architecture, which underpins models like the Punch EV and Curvv EV. The platform supports modern EV capabilities, including the potential for an all-wheel drive (AWD) dual-motor setup, similar to the upcoming Harrier EV, slated for an earlier launch in Q1 2025.
While specific specifications remain under wraps, the Sierra EV may come with multiple battery options, a front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout, and possibly AWD capabilities. These features aim to make the Sierra EV a strong contender in the premium electric SUV segment.
Tata Sierra ICE: Powertrain and Platform
The Tata Sierra ICE version will likely be built on the ATLAS platform (Adaptive Tech Forward Lifestyle), which supports versatile body styles and advanced 4X4 capabilities. If Tata opts for a 4X4 drivetrain, it would mark the return of an ICE-powered 4X4 SUV from the brand since the Safari Storme was discontinued in 2020.
The ICE version is likely to be powered by Tata’s reliable 2.0-liter diesel engine, currently used in the Harrier and Safari. This ensures that the ICE Sierra remains a rugged, adventure-ready option for SUV enthusiasts.
Launch Timeline and Market Positioning
Tata Motors plans to unveil both EV and ICE versions of the Sierra at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Expo before their respective launches. The Sierra EV will take precedence, mirroring the launch strategy of the Curvv, where the EV variant debuted first, followed by the ICE version.
The price announcement for the Sierra lineup is expected in the second half of 2025, with deliveries commencing shortly after.
Tata Sierra: A Reimagined Icon for the Future
The Tata Sierra aims to blend nostalgia with modern innovation, making it a compelling choice in both EV and ICE segments. Whether through the Acti.EV architecture for the Sierra EV or the 4X4-ready ATLAS platform for the ICE variant, Tata is set to redefine the premium SUV experience in India.
With competitors gearing up in both electric and traditional SUV markets, the Sierra’s revival could strengthen Tata Motors’ position as a leader in innovation and sustainability.
