Tata Motors India already have a compact SUV and a mid size SUV in the form of Harrier. In order to fill the segment of Creta and Seltos, which is booming up like never before, the domestic carmakers will bring Blackbird SUV to join the South Korean twins.

It will neither be based on ALFA architecture nor OMEGA which underpins Harrier rather Tata Motors will borrow a platform from Chinese company, Cherry who have been trying to enter the market. Also the same Chinese company had a joint venture with Land Rover in their country as well.

The reason for not using either the platform is that Tata Motors tried to stretch out the ALFA platform (which forms base for Altroz) but weren’t able to do while it wasn’t possible either to shorten the OMEGA architecture as well. The length of Tata Blackbird will be somewhere around 4.2 m to 4.3 m.

There will be 1 petrol engine and 1 Diesel engine on offer for the Blackbird SUV:

  • The 1.5 litre direct injection petrol engine is a new unit which will also power Tata Harrier. It generates power in excess of 150 BHP and peak torque is rated at around 220 NM. Transmission options are 6 Speed Manual and DCT.
  • 1.5 litre Revotorq Diesel engine comes directly from the Nexon compact SUV with the same set of power (108 BHP) and torque (260 NM). It gets 6 speed manual and 6 speed AMT gearbox.

Tata will launch the Blackbird at a competitive price of Rs. 9.3 Lakhs for the standard trim going upto Rs. 15 Lakhs (Ex Showroom) for the diesel top spec variant. It will undercut all the rival vehicles in the price aspect.

The sedan will get 80% similarity with the concept version.

The interiors of the sedan were revealed in the concept version but surely it will be evolution from the current design language. Wooden finish is used on the dashboard and the door handles. The steering wheel unit will be similar to one seen on Altroz, Nexon and all other Tata’s.

Instrument cluster is all digital. Infotainment system will be borrowed from Tata Harrier and size of around 8.8-inch. Although the concept version gets moonroof but for India, it will get electric sunroof only.
