Chandigarh Government has set a limit on ICE Vehicle Registration to promote Electric Vehicles!

The Chandigarh Government is taking a step to lesser the number of ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles registrations by setting a limit on registrations for customers to switch to EVs.

ICE Vehicle Registration Limited – Good Move or Bad Move?

The Chandigarh Government is taking a step forward towards the electric vehicles and it’s zero carbon omission. Setting a limit on the registration of ICE vehicles is a good move as this was one of their initiatives of the implementation of Electric Vehicles Policy 2022. This policy aims to limit the usage of ICE vehicles or buying of ICE vehicles by setting a limit, let’s just try to understand what this limit is actually.

So, to make sure people transition to the electric vehicles swiftly, the Government of Chandigarh has set a reduction target for ICE vehicles, 10% reduction for 4-wheelers and 35% reduction for 2-wheelers compared to last year. For the current year, the reduction targets are higher, 20% reduction for 4-wheelers, and 70% reduction for 2-wheelers, literally double it from 35%. Because of which, the 2-wheelers registration will be stopped after it achieves 6,202 registrations, and 22,626 registrations for 4-wheelers. Once, the target is achieved, the ICE vehicles will be temporary halted for registration.

There are advantages to these implementations like it helps to control the number of ICE vehicles on the road and also help in reducing the air pollution from the gases emitted from the exhausts, and helps improve air quality for people to breathe a little freely. Moreover, it promotes adapting the electric vehicles with zero omissions and very environment friendly, and because of these targets, not only the roads will be a bit free from vehicles to move little faster than how crowded it gets, it allows you to consider other transportation modes such as trains, buses, walking, or maybe cycling.

The Chandigarh Government estimates the 2-wheelers target will be achieved by the first week of July 2023, and the target for the 4-wheelers will be achieved by the end of this year. So, do you think the Government made the right move or is it still early to call for those moves?
