Kawasaki has officially pulled the plug on the Ninja 400 in India. The Ninja 400 was discontinued in 2020 due to emission norms, but they brought it back in 2022. It had a good run following the launch of the new Ninja 500, until stocks ran out. Now, the Ninja 500 steps in to fill the gap left by its predecessor, not just in India but also in international markets.

The Ninja 400 was hailed for its performance and aesthetics, initially positioned to succeed the Ninja 300 in India. However, Kawasaki managed to keep the Ninja 300 competitive by localizing its parts, making it more attractively priced. In contrast, the Ninja 400, being brought in India through the CBU Route, carried a price tag that match with the Indian Market expectation. This might explain why the Ninja 300, despite its age, continues to hold its ground while the Ninja 400 bows out.
Now, the Ninja 500 replaces the Ninja 400. It comes with a 451cc, Liquid-Cooled, 4-Stroke, Parallel Twin, DOHC, 8 Valves engine producing 44 BHP and 42.6 NM Torque mated to an 6 Speed Gearbox, revamped design for both front and rear sections. It also boasts a new digital LCD with Bluetooth connectivity. Enthusiasts in India had hoped for the Ninja 500 SE variant with its striking Kawasaki green color and a TFT display, but it seems Kawasaki had different plans for the Indian market.
Let’s hope in the future, Kawasaki is able to localized the production of the Ninja 400 which would bring its price much lower, resulting in competition and new customers.
