Maruti’s New Rs. 9 Lakh SUV with Hybrid Powertrain is a big threat for all its rivals including Hyundai Creta!
Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to introduce a new SUV called the Escudo, which will be placed above the Brezza and below the Grand Vitara in its lineup. Set to be retailed through the Arena network, the Escudo will target the high-demand mid-size SUV segment, where models like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos currently lead the market. It aims to offer a strong mix of value, features, and practicality at a more accessible price point than the Grand Vitara.
Design and Size
The Maruti Escudo is likely to be slightly longer than the Grand Vitara, which measures 4,345mm, and may also offer better boot space than the Grand Vitara’s 373 litres. In terms of design, the Escudo borrows cues from the upcoming e-Vitara SUV. This includes horizontal Y-shaped LED DRLs, a low-positioned bonnet, radar module for ADAS placed between the lower air dam, and connected rear tail-lamps inspired by the Tata Curvv. On the inside, the cabin layout and design will be quite similar to what we’ve already seen on the Grand Vitara.
Platform and Engine Options
The upcoming SUV will be based on the same Global-C platform used in the Grand Vitara. Engine options are expected to include a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 102 bhp and 137 Nm of torque, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. A strong hybrid version will also likely be available with 114 bhp and 141 Nm of torque, mated to an eCVT transmission. A CNG variant could be on offer too, with 87 bhp and 121.5 Nm torque, paired with a 5-speed manual. Like the Grand Vitara, the Escudo is also expected to come with an All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) option.
Features
Maruti Escudo is expected to come loaded with a range of modern features. This could include front ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, multiple drive modes, rear sunblinds, automatic climate control, a 360-degree camera system, ADAS functions, electronic parking brake with auto hold, and a heads-up display.
Final Thoughts
With the Escudo, Maruti Suzuki plans to offer a more practical and affordable alternative to the Grand Vitara while keeping the design and features competitive. By selling it through the wider Arena dealership network, Maruti is aiming to reach a larger customer base. Positioned smartly between the Brezza and Grand Vitara, the Escudo could become a popular choice in the mid-size SUV market.
