A new and much-awaited American SUV has been spied testing in India again!
Tesla has been spotted again in India testing the Model Y SUV with launch expected to take place soon. It is likely, Tesla will first launch the Model Y and then Model 3 after sometime to gauge response from the Indian audience.
Tesla Model Y: Design and Features
The Tesla Model Y facelift sports a sleek design with a coupe-like roofline, split LED headlights, connected LED daytime running lights (DRLs), and eye-catching 3D LED tail lights. The bonnet has strong creases for a muscular look, while the roof and B-pillars are finished in black, creating a striking contrast.
Inside, the Model Y offers a clean, minimalist cabin dominated by a large 15.4-inch touchscreen that handles most functions. The driver’s display is replaced by the central screen, while rear passengers get their own 8-inch screen for streaming videos and playing games. Notable features include Tesla Autopilot with advanced driver assistance and the Tesla Vision safety suite.
Battery, Range, and Performance
Tesla is expected to launch two Model Y variants in India: a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and a Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) model.
- The RWD version will have a 59 kWh battery, producing 231 bhp and 380 Nm of torque, with a range of around 455 km.
- The Long Range AWD variant will feature dual motors, delivering 441 bhp and 493 Nm of torque, along with a 75–82 kWh battery, providing a range of up to 662 km.
Globally, the Model Y supports fast charging of up to 250 kW and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 4.7 seconds. It also offers a generous cargo space of 2,152 litres with the rear seats folded and rides on 19-inch to 20-inch alloy wheels.
Tesla’s First Showroom in India
Tesla has secured a five-year lease for a 4,003 sq ft showroom in Maker Maxity, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai, near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The lease is valued at around ₹3.89 crore ($446,000) for the first year, with a 5% annual rent hike, making the total cost approximately ₹21.77 crore ($2.5 million) over the lease period.
Initially, Tesla plans to bring its vehicles to India as Completely Built Units (CBUs), which are subject to high import tariffs—a point that CEO Elon Musk has often raised in discussions about the Indian market.
Final Thoughts
The Tesla Model Y facelift brings a refreshed design, a feature-rich cabin, and impressive performance options. With its advanced driver assistance systems and strong range figures, the Model Y remains a strong contender in the premium electric SUV segment.
