Maruti Suzuki will be launching new Full Hybrid Hatchback in 2026 giving 30+ KMPL mileage on single fuel tank!
Maruti Wagon R has been one of India’s most popular family hatchbacks for over 20 years. Known for its reliability, fuel efficiency, and spacious interiors, the model has consistently ranked among the country’s best-selling cars. Now, Suzuki is gearing up to unveil the new-generation Wagon R in Japan later this year, with an expected India launch by mid-2026.
New-Gen Wagon R: Full Hybrid Powertrain and Features
Reports suggest that the upcoming Wagon R will feature a strong hybrid setup, similar to the Solio in Japan. This hybrid system will pair a 660cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine producing 54 bhp and 58 Nm torque with an electric motor delivering 9 bhp and 29 Nm. Power will be transmitted through an electric continuously variable transmission (e-CVT), enhancing fuel efficiency and driving performance.
Apart from the hybrid powertrain, the new Wagon R will introduce several changes. Notably, the traditional rear doors will be replaced with sliding doors, a common feature in Japanese tall-boy hatchbacks, ensuring easier passenger access and improved cargo flexibility. The interior will also offer extensive seat customization options, allowing users to configure seating layouts based on their needs.
In terms of dimensions, the Japan-spec Wagon R will measure 3,395 mm in length, 1,475 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height, with a 2,460 mm wheelbase. The car will have a kerb weight of 850 kg. Pricing in Japan is expected to start at 1.3 million yen (around Rs. 7.68 lakh), with top variants reaching 1.9 million yen (around Rs. 11.22 lakh).
Hybrid Wagon R for India
Maruti Suzuki is developing an affordable hybrid system for the Indian market, which will debut first in the Fronx facelift before rolling out to other models like the Baleno, Swift, Dzire, and Wagon R. This system will likely be paired with a 1.2 L, 3 cylinder Z12E petrol engine, developed in-house to keep costs in check. While Maruti could have sourced hybrid tech from Toyota, it was found to be cost-prohibitive for smaller cars. However, larger models like the Grand Vitara and Invicto continue to use Toyota’s Atkinson cycle strong-hybrid system.
Government policies will also play a crucial role in Maruti’s hybrid strategy. While EVs enjoy a lower 5% GST and state-level tax waivers, strong hybrids face a 28% GST plus a compensation cess, raising the tax burden to 43%. Only a few states, like Uttar Pradesh, have offered incentives for strong hybrids. If more states follow suit, hybrid adoption in India could accelerate.
With its strong hybrid setup and improved practicality, the new-gen Wagon R could redefine fuel-efficient city driving once it arrives in India by 2026.
