A New Sub 4 Meter Compact SUV has been spotted for the first time in Chennai with multiple signs pointing towards only one SUV!

Hyundai’s next big product phase for India has officially gone into motion, and the latest sign is a camouflaged SUV spotted testing near the brand’s Sriperumbudur facility in Chennai. With the automaker preparing one of its most aggressive launch cycles in years, this sighting hints at a major update coming to the compact and subcompact SUV space. Hyundai has traditionally held a strong position in India, but recent months have seen Tata Motors and Mahindra outpace it in volume, thanks to rapid model updates—especially in SUVs and EVs. Hyundai still enjoys strong brand trust, yet the need for fresher products has become clear.

To counter this, Hyundai has lined up close to 26 updates and launches across segments, including 7–8 all-new models. Hatchbacks, compact SUVs, midsize SUVs, EVs, hybrids, MPVs and even a lifestyle off-roader are part of this roadmap.

New Hyundai SUV Spied - Exter Facelift

Why This Test Mule Matters

Hyundai had already confirmed an all-new compact EV for 2027, developed and manufactured in India using a cost-efficient version of the E-GMP platform. Inspired by the Hyundai Inster EV, it will offer Standard Range and Long Range battery options and rival the Tata Punch EV.

However, the camouflaged model spotted in Chennai is clearly not that SUV. The prototype shows a fuel-filler cap, visible exhaust, and no front-mounted charging port, confirming it’s an ICE-powered model. This narrows it down to two strong possibilities: the Exter facelift or the India-spec Hyundai Bayon.

Most Likely it’s Exter Facelift

Launched in 2023, the Exter is due for a mid-cycle refresh, and the silhouette of the test mule closely matches its stance. The updated model will offer:

  • A more premium interior
  • Better quality materials
  • Confirmed Hyundai’s New 12.9-inch Infotainment System powered by Android Automotive OS (AAOS) and 9.9-inch Full Digital Driver’s Display.
  • OTA (Over-The-Air) updates and deeper Google integration

Engine options are likely to remain the same – 1.2 L Petrol with 5 Speed MT / AMT choice; and 1.2 L CNG Option.

If it’s indeed the Exter facelift prototype, then we can expect the launch of the SUV by Late 2026.

Possible it’s Hyundai Bayon for India?

Hyundai Bayon

Another strong possibility is the Hyundai Bayon, a global crossover positioned between the Exter and Venue. Hyundai has been evaluating it for India, with a expected launched in 2026.

However, it’s highly unlikely for it to be Bayon since it’s a crossover coupe SUV, and the test mule we see in the above image is clearly not a coupe.

Although, whenever the Bayon launches in India and it’s expected to get –

  • Hyundai’s new locally manufactured 1.2 L Turbo Petrol Engine with higher torque and possible inclusion for hybrid.
  • Another option of the global 1.0 L Turbo Petrol with 6 Speed MT and 7 Speed DCT choice.
  • A more European-style design to stand apart from Exter and Venue

Final Thoughts

The SUV spotted in Chennai strongly suggests Hyundai is preparing a major update for its compact lineup, most likely the Exter facelift given the visible ICE components and familiar silhouette. While the Bayon is also under evaluation for India, its coupe-style design makes it an unlikely match for this prototype. With multiple launches planned between 2026 and 2028 – including EVs, hybrids and refreshed SUVs—Hyundai is gearing up to regain momentum, and this test mule is an early sign of its upcoming push in the segment.
