Mahindra is all set to launch new SUVs which will deliver mileage of upto 30 KMPL which is bad news for Maruti and Toyota!

Mahindra is preparing to expand its SUV portfolio by introducing hybrid powertrain options for the BE 6 and XEV 9e models, both of which are currently available only as electric vehicles. This move is part of the brand’s broader strategy to cater to a wider customer base by offering multiple powertrain choices. As of May 2025, Mahindra recorded sales of 2,604 electric vehicles, driven mainly by its born-electric lineup. With an ambitious monthly sales goal of 5,000 units, Mahindra is now banking on hybrid variants to push the numbers further.

BE 6 and XEV 9e to Get Range-Extender Hybrid Tech

The BE 6 and XEV 9e are set to feature a range-extender hybrid system. Unlike traditional hybrids, this setup uses a 1.2-litre petrol engine that acts solely as a generator. It does not drive the wheels directly but recharges the battery, which in turn powers the electric motors that propel the vehicle. This approach helps maintain the benefits of EV-like performance while reducing range anxiety.

Both SUVs are underpinned by Mahindra’s INGLO architecture, a flexible platform originally developed for pure electric vehicles. However, it is now being modified to accommodate the internal combustion engine required for the hybrid setup. Development is currently underway, focusing on the mechanical integration and tuning of this hybrid powertrain system.

XUV 3XO Hybrid Will Use Strong Hybrid Setup

Apart from the BE and XEV series, Mahindra is also working on a hybrid variant of the XUV 3XO compact SUV. Unlike the range-extender system seen on the BE 6 and XEV 9e, the XUV 3XO will feature a strong hybrid setup—technically referred to as a series-parallel hybrid.

This system will pair Mahindra’s existing 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor. The hybrid system will automatically decide whether to use the engine, motor, or both, depending on driving conditions. This approach not only ensures optimal performance but also aims to significantly enhance fuel efficiency, making it a compelling alternative in the compact SUV segment.

Hybrid Powertrains Gaining Momentum in India

Mahindra’s hybrid push comes at a time when other major OEMs are also exploring cost-effective hybrid technologies. For instance, Maruti is reportedly developing its own affordable range-extender hybrid system for mass-market models such as the Fronx, Swift, Baleno, and an upcoming compact MPV. This indicates a broader industry trend where hybrid tech is becoming a key bridge between internal combustion engines and full electrification.

Final Thoughts

Mahindra’s decision to introduce hybrid options for the BE 6, XEV 9e, and XUV 3XO reflects the changing dynamics of the Indian automotive market. With range anxiety and charging infrastructure still being hurdles for many buyers, hybrid systems offer a practical solution. As Mahindra aims to double its monthly EV and hybrid sales, these new variants could play a crucial role in expanding its market share while providing consumers with more flexible and efficient mobility choices.
