Exterior:

The Toyota Innova Hycross sports a modern and robust exterior with an SUV-inspired presence. Its front end is dominated by a large hexagonal grille with thick chrome accents, flanked by sleek headlamps reminiscent of the Fortuner. The muscular bonnet and matte silver-accented bumper, along with prominent LED DRLs that double as turn indicators, add to its imposing look.

From the side, the Hycross mimics an SUV with clean body lines, subtly squared wheel arches, and plastic cladding. The 18-inch alloy wheels enhance its appeal, though a thicker tyre sidewall might have improved its stance. The vehicle’s narrower track contributes to a tighter turning radius, making it practical for urban driving. The window line gently slopes towards the rear, complemented by a sloping rear windscreen and horizontal tail-lamps, giving it a crossover-like appearance with design cues from Toyota’s global styling.

Interior:

The Toyota Innova Hycross offers a refined cabin experience, thanks to its monocoque construction, which lowers the floor for easier access. The interior is a significant upgrade from the Crysta, featuring a free-standing 10.25-inch touchscreen, premium brown and black, 7-inch Digital Cluster same as the one found in Hyryder, and matte silver accents. Key functions like climate control and drive modes are managed via physical buttons, enhancing usability.

The front row seats are equipped with ventilated seats and electric adjustment along with memory functions to ensure comfort and convenience. The hybrid battery is positioned under the front seats without compromising middle-row footroom. The Second Row you get Ottoman seats which are electrically adjustable; and also benefits from window shades, climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. The third row is accessible and comfortable for adults, though taller occupants might find limited headroom. 

The overall material quality in the MPV is decent, providing a satisfactory feel throughout the cabin. However, the 360-degree camera quality stands out as a bit disappointing, resembling something you’d expect from aftermarket installations rather than a factory-fitted system.

Space and Comfort

Toyota’s HyCross MPV measures almost 4.8 meters in length and the amount of space inside offered is impeccable. The driver’s seat offers a high-riding stance and provides a commanding view The extended wheelbase provides generous space, particularly in the second row, where the ottoman seats with part-electric adjustment offer a luxurious, chauffeur-like experience for passengers. The reclining angle of the second-row ottoman seats is unmatched, ensuring exceptional comfort and relaxation on long journeys. Third row is comfortable for both adults and kids, however, adults may not find it comfortable for longer journeys.,  Practical boot space is available, with the third row folding flat for increased cargo capacity. The wide boot opening, low floor, flat loading lip, and electric tailgate enhance convenience.

Drive Review

Driving a big premium MPV like the Innova HyCross makes sense to take your family along for a long vacation. We had the chance to drive the top-spec ZX(O) Hybrid variant available only in 7-Seater Configuration. This variant is equipped with a 2.0 L 4 Cylinder Petrol Hybrid Engine delivering 183 BHP and 188 NM Torque paired to an eCVT Gearbox. Toyota claims it can do 21.10 KMPL Mileage, however, in real world, we were getting 12 – 16 KMPL Mileage on the highway, and 10 – 12 KMPL in city.

The eCVT gearbox provides a smooth experience during relaxed highway cruising, making it ideal for long drives. However, when you push the MPV harder, it can become tiring on your foot. While there are multiple drive modes—Eco, Normal, and Sport—the power delivery across these modes feels quite similar. On the plus side, cruising at speeds above 100 km/h results in lower-than-expected NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) levels, which contributes to a more comfortable and worry-free journey by minimizing external noise.

Shifting focus to the steering, it’s designed to be light and easy to maneuver at low speeds, making tasks like parking or navigating through tight city streets a breeze. As the vehicle picks up speed, the steering gradually gains weight, providing a more substantial and connected feel, which enhances driver confidence on highways and during faster drives. This adaptive steering response ensures a balanced driving experience, offering the right level of control and stability at any speed.  Lastly, regarding brake performance, the MPV is equipped with disc brakes on both the front and rear wheels. During brake testing at 60 km/h, the vehicle comes to a halt almost instantaneously, demonstrating that the braking system is highly effective and provides the necessary stopping power for safe and confident driving.

Ride and Handling

The Hycross features a suspension setup with MacPherson struts at the front and a semi-independent torsion beam at the rear. Toyota has done an excellent job tuning this suspension, although it leans towards the stiffer side. This stiffness enhances stability, especially at higher speeds and when taking corners, providing a balanced ride that combines comfort with a sense of control and confidence on the road.

Our Verdict

The time has come to know whether you should buy the premium MPV or wait for something better? Well, the Toyota Innova Hycross is an excellent choice for those seeking a stylish and spacious MPV with a modern SUV-inspired design. Its premium interior, advanced features, and thoughtful comfort elements make it a strong contender for families and long-distance travelers. The hybrid engine, while not matching the claimed mileage in real-world driving, still offers good efficiency, and the vehicle’s adaptive steering and safety features enhance overall driving confidence.
