Maruti Suzuki despite decline in sales over last year and slight growth over June 2024 Sales, continues to dominate market while Hyundai and Tata both report decline in sales over last year.

Maruti Suzuki maintained its market leadership in July 2024 by selling 1,37,463 units, although this represented a 9.6% year-over-year (YoY) decline from 1,52,126 units in July 2023. Month-over-month (MoM), Maruti’s sales saw a marginal increase of 0.2% from 1,37,160 units in June 2024. Maruti is consistently testing its first-ever electric SUV, eVX, with a 550 km range and importantly, the first Maruti EV with ADAS, set for launch in 2025.
Hyundai sold 49,013 units in July 2024, marking a 3.3% YoY decrease from 50,701 units in July 2023. MoM sales also declined by 2.2% from 50,103 units in June 2024. Hyundai is currently testing two models – the Alcazar Facelift with Palisade-inspired elements and a few new features; the other is the EV version of the Creta with a 500 km range and subtle design changes over the ICE version.

Tata Motors reported sales of 44,727 units in July 2024, a 6.1% decrease from 47,630 units in July 2023. However, the company saw a MoM growth of 2.8% from 43,527 units in June 2024. Tata Motors will launch its first coupe SUV, Curvv, both in electric and ICE form boasting first-in-segment features tomorrow, on August 7th.
Mahindra experienced a significant 15.0% YoY growth, selling 41,623 units in July 2024 compared to 36,205 units in July 2023. MoM sales also increased by 4.0% from 40,022 units in June 2024. Toyota’s sales surged by 42.3% YoY, reaching 29,533 units in July 2024 from 20,759 units in July 2023. MoM, Toyota saw a robust 14.7% growth from 25,752 units in June 2024.
Kia sold 20,507 units in July 2024, a slight 2.5% YoY increase from 20,002 units in July 2023. However, MoM sales declined by 3.7% from 21,300 units in June 2024. Kia is currently testing the Carens & Carnival Facelift, along with the Clavis/Syros SUV, and the flagship electric SUV, EV9. These Kia models will launch by the first half of 2025.
Honda’s sales in July 2024 stood at 4,624 units, reflecting a 4.9% YoY decline from 4,864 units in July 2023, and a 3.7% MoM decrease from 4,804 units in June 2024. Honda will also be launching the new generation Amaze by the end of this year. MG Motor reported a YoY sales decrease of 8.8%, with 4,572 units sold in July 2024 compared to 5,012 units in July 2023. MoM, sales slightly declined by 1.6% from 4,644 units in June 2024.

Volkswagen (VW) experienced a 10.7% YoY decline, selling 3,407 units in July 2024 compared to 3,814 units in July 2023. However, VW’s MoM sales grew by 4.5% from 3,260 units in June 2024. Renault’s sales dropped by 21.5% YoY, from 3,607 units in July 2023 to 2,832 units in July 2024. MoM, sales decreased by 20.3% from 3,553 units in June 2024. Renault will be bringing back its beloved Duster in India in 2025 to boost its low sales and expand its presence.
Skoda saw a 50.0% YoY decrease in sales, with 2,103 units sold in July 2024 compared to 4,207 units in July 2023. MoM, sales declined by 18.0% from 2,566 units in June 2024. Skoda and Volkswagen are bringing facelift updates to their SUVs (Skoda Kushaq, VW Taigun) and sedans (Skoda Slavia, VW Virtus) in the second half of 2025 to give their rivals, Hyundai Verna and Honda City, a tough time. Moreover, Skoda will be launching a sub-4-meter SUV in March 2025 to rival the Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, and others.
Nissan experienced a 6.6% YoY decline, with 2,011 units sold in July 2024 compared to 2,152 units in July 2023. MoM, sales fell by 4.6% from 2,107 units in June 2024. Nissan will be launching the facelift update of the Magnite by the end of this year. Citroen’s sales plummeted by 13.7% YoY, with 335 units sold in July 2024 compared to 388 units in July 2023. MoM, sales slightly decreased by 1.2% from 339 units in June 2024. Citroen will announce the pricing of the Basalt with full variants by the end of this month.
Jeep recorded the steepest YoY decline, with sales dropping by 37.4% from 441 units in July 2023 to 276 units in July 2024. MoM, sales fell by 1.8% from 281 units in June 2024.
In conclusion, July 2024 presented a diverse picture of the Indian automotive market. Maruti Suzuki retained its leadership position despite a year-over-year decline, while Hyundai and Tata Motors showed mixed results with some recovery month-over-month. Mahindra and Toyota stood out with significant growth, highlighting their strong market presence. Kia and Honda faced challenges, with Kia’s YoY increase countered by a MoM drop and Honda seeing declines in both metrics.
MG Motor and Volkswagen saw decreases, though VW managed some month-over-month improvement. Renault and Skoda experienced sharp declines, with Skoda’s sales halving compared to the previous year. Nissan and Citroen also struggled, and Jeep faced the most severe decline among the brands. Overall, the market is witnessing shifts in consumer preferences and competitive dynamics, with several brands planning major updates and new launches to enhance their standings in the coming months.
