A recently leaked design patent has unveiled exciting news for Tata Motors enthusiasts. The company is working on introducing new terrain modes for its upcoming SUVs, starting with the eagerly anticipated Tata Harrier EV. The patent reveals a rotary knob with up to seven different terrain modes, hinting at the inclusion of Snow, Sand, Gravel, and even a Custom mode. This innovation suggests that future Tata SUVs, including the Harrier EV and Safari EV, will feature an all-wheel-drive (AWD) or 4×4 configuration, a significant leap from Tata’s current front-wheel-drive (FWD) lineup.

Currently, Tata Motors offers three traction modes—Normal, Rough, and Wet—in its flagship ICE-powered models like the Harrier and Safari. These modes, however, are limited to front-wheel-drive configurations, relying on the car’s electronic stability program (ESP) to optimize performance on varying terrains.
The upcoming Tata Harrier EV, along with the Safari EV, is expected to benefit from more sophisticated terrain modes, labeled as “Terrain Response 2.” These new drive modes could include Normal, Snow, Mud & Ruts, Sand, Rough, and an Individual mode that allows for personalized vehicle settings. The Individual mode could be particularly valuable for those who want to fine-tune their vehicle’s off-road behavior.
The leaked patent also indicates that the Tata Harrier EV will likely be equipped with a dual-motor AWD system. This will be the first time since the discontinuation of the Tata Hexa that the automaker introduces an SUV where the rear wheels are driven by the powertrain. This all-new AWD setup is expected to significantly enhance the vehicle’s off-road capabilities and would be the only SUV in the SUV in its EV segment to be equipped with AWD / 4×4 Setup.
Tata’s upcoming SUVs, including the Harrier EV and Safari EV, will be built on the Acti.ev platform. This architecture can accommodate a 4×4 setup, further enhancing the off-roading potential of these SUVs. While Tata’s current portfolio consists entirely of FWD models, the inclusion of AWD in its upcoming electric SUVs is a strategic move that will attract off-road enthusiasts.
With the introduction of advanced Terrain Response Modes and AWD/4×4 configurations, the Tata Harrier EV is set to revolutionize the Indian SUV market. This new development will not only enhance the off-road capabilities of Tata’s flagship SUVs but also position them as strong competitors in a segment where AWD and 4×4 configurations are in high demand. As the launch of the Tata Harrier EV approaches, it promises to bring cutting-edge technology along with some new features which the ICE version doesn’t get.
