Hyundai Motors has filed two new trademarks, Hy-CNG and Hy-CNG Duo, signaling a new naming convention and hinting at the introduction of dual-cylinder technology to enhance boot space in their CNG cars.
With the surge in fuel prices, many people are switching to CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) because it is generally cheaper than petrol and diesel, offering significant savings on fuel expenses. Additionally, CNG is known for better fuel efficiency in terms of cost per kilometer. However, a major drawback of CNG is the large cylinder that occupies most of the boot space, leaving little room for luggage.Tata Motors addressed this issue by introducing dual cylinders that are shorter in size and can be fitted where the spare wheel is usually kept. This design innovation retains most of the boot space, allowing travelers to carry more luggage. Following suit, Hyundai has recently trademarked two names – Hy-CNG and Hy-CNG Duo.
Currently, Hyundai offers CNG options in the Exter, Grand i10 Nios, and the Aura. To increase sales and compete with Maruti’s S-CNG and Tata’s i-CNG with Dual Cylinder CNG Kits, Hyundai may adopt a two-pronged strategy. They could introduce Hy-CNG Single-Cylinder Kits for more affordable models and Hy-CNG Duo Dual-Cylinder Kits for premium models.Similar to Tata’s i-CNG, Hyundai’s new approach is expected to provide more boot space by redesigning the storage area for the CNG cylinders. This will give consumers more room for carry bags and luggage. With the trademark status marked as “Formalities Check Pass,” it is likely that Hyundai will expand CNG options to other models such as the i20, Venue, Verna, Creta, and Alcazar, following a strategy similar to Maruti Suzuki’s comprehensive CNG lineup.
