Before Hyundai launches the Exter in the coming weeks, why don’t we compare the Exter against the Maruti S-Presso to figure out if buying the S-Presso is the right decision or wait for the launch of Exter!
From the front, it has flat bonnet with a big Hyundai logo on it and the three-tier design nose. It has H-shaped LED DRLs that are connected via a black strip that could possibly be a connected LED light bar for the top variant. The headlamps are square shape that are projector headlamps and could be an LED for top variants. Then there is the body cladding finished in matte black all over the car to contribute towards the Exter’s looks. Moving to the side, you’ll realize the SUV has boxy shape. The doors seems to be big to accommodate easy in’s and out’s of the SUV. The alloy wheels, roof rails, and A and B-pillars has the dual-tone treatment. It has an upright tailgate with the rear windshield slightly tilted, shark fin antenna at the top, small roof-spoiler, flat and tall rear bumper with dual-tone finished. The taillamps has an H-shaped in them with a big black panel with big Hyundai logo at the center, it could feature connected LED light bar for the taillamps in top variants.
As for the S-Presso, it has four rounded square shape element on the front face with logo at the center. It has halogen headlamps with halogen indicators, aerial on top, and the bumpers are faux skid plate. Moving to the side, it has a simple design with not much happening on the body; the S-Presso rides on the 14-inch steel wheels, no alloys on offer. Moving to the rear, it has a C-shaped taillamps with halogen indicators and that’s about it.
As for the Exter, it’ll have the 8-inch infotainment system that’ll be free-standing stand out on the dashboard with two-spoke multi-function steering wheel with digital instrument cluster. The gear selector will not be placed between the two front seats but instead it will be integrated with the console which will be positioned slightly vertically for each reach. The door handles are finished in chrome and ambient lighting.
In S-Presso, it has an 7-inch infotainment system with the instrument cluster above the infotainment system and AC vents right next to it. It doesn’t have the dual-tone dashboard option, Manual Climate Control, round AC vents at the sides, and two charging ports at the front. No rear AC vents on offer, and the rear seats are split in 50:50 ratio with no charging ports at the rear. It has 2-speakers, one in the front and one in the rear, and that’s about it.
As for the dimensions of the Exter, expect the length to be around 3800mm, width of 1595mm, and height of 1575mm with a 2400mm wheelbase. It’ll have fuel tank of 35 litres and ground clearance of 170mm. The S-Presso measures 3565mm in length, 1520mm in width, and 1567mm in height with wheelbase of 2380mm.

When it comes to engine options, the Hyundai Exter comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine produces 81.8 bhp and 113.8 Nm of torque paired to a 5-speed Manual Gearbox, and 5-speed Automatic Gearbox. The S-Presso on the other hand, is powered by the 1.0-litre petrol engine that puts out 65.71 bhp and 89 Nm of torque mated to a 5-speed Manual and AGS (Auto Gear Shift) gearbox.

Hyundai had confirmed on Monday that the upcoming Exter will also with a 1.2-litre Bi-Fuel (CNG) engine that puts out 67.72 bhp and 95.2 Nm of torque mated to a 5-speed Manual Gearbox and will be available from the launch day. The S-Presso also has a CNG engine on offer. It has the 1.0-litre CNG engine that put out 55.92 bhp and 82.1 Nm of torque and drives the front wheels via a 5-speed Manual Gearbox.
Hyundai Exter will come with numerous features such as digital instrument cluster, 8-inch infotainment system, automatic climate control, wireless charging, sunroof, rear AC vents, Type-C USB Charging ports both front and rear, voice control, ambient lighting, cruise control, cooled glovebox, connected car tech, height adjustable driver seat, and 15-inch alloy wheels. In safety, it’ll come equipped with six airbags, ABS with EBD, Tyre-Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), hill-hold assist, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), ISOFIX anchorages, and reverse-parking camera with sensors.
In Maruti S-Presso, it has features such as 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, 14-inch steel wheels, voice control, 2-speakers standard sound system, and Idle Start/Stop. In safety, it has hill-hold assist, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, dual airbags, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso starts at Rs. 4.26 lakh for the entry-level ‘standard’ variant and goes up to Rs. 6.12 lakh for the top variant ‘VXI CNG’ and as for the Hyundai Exter it is expected to start at Rs. 6 lakhs.
In the end, it’s worth waiting for the Exter than buying S-Presso as in terms of features there is almost nothing in comparison to the Exter. Moreover it has only two airbags, and no AC vents in the rear. It’s better to buy Exter as the S-Presso is best for people for tight budget or in need of better mileage.
