Hyundai has unveiled the design sketch of the upcoming Exter and therefore it only makes sense to compare the Exter against the Tata Punch to see which one would be a better option.
Hyundai Exter vs Tata Punch – Exterior and Interior
Hyundai Motors India unveiled a design render of the Exter which features H-shaped LED DRLs with round-shaped projector headlamps and the parametric pattern front face. The bumpers on the Exter as seen in the render, will be finished in faux skid silver plate. If you didn’t know, the upcoming Exter is build on the Hyundai’s Grand i10 Nios platform, K1, which was first introduced in 2008 with the second-gen Hyundai Santro.
The front of the Punch has blacked out element that connects with the LED DRLs and Tata logo at the center. Below that is the tri-arrow grille that connects with the fog lamps and projector headlamps above them that are obviously halogen. At the side, there is slight cuts to have that punch look with 16-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, there is the tri-arrow treatment in the taillamps as well which are of course going to be LEDs and faux black skid plate.
Hyundai Exter has two-spoke multi-function steering wheel while the punch has three-spoke multi-function steering wheel. The Hyundai Exter has digital instrument cluster while the Punch has semi-digital instrument cluster. The Exter has 8-inch infotainment system while the Punch has 7-inch infotainment system with controls for the HVAC below. The Exter will have ambient lighting which the Punch doesn’t have.

As you can see at the dimensions, the Exter has a length of 3595mm which is 232mm shorter than the Punch’s length of 3827mm. The Exter has a width of 1595mm which is 147mm less than the 1742mm width of Tata Punch. The Exter has a height of 1575mm while the Punch has 1615mm with 40mm difference. The wheelbase of the Exter will be 2400mm which is 45mm shorter than the 2445mm wheelbase of Punch. The Exter will have a boot space of 301 litres which is 65 litres less than the Punch’s 366 litres boot space. Lastly, the Exter will have 35 litres fuel tank while the Punch will have 37 litres fuel tank.

The Hyundai Exter comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine produces 81.8 bhp and 113.8 Nm of torque paired to a 5-speed Manual Transmission, and 5-speed Automatic Transmission with expected fuel efficiency of 20.1 km/l. It’ll also get one additional petrol engine which is 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine that puts out 120 bhp and 172 Nm of torque paired to 5-speed Manual Transmission and 7-speed DCT Transmission and expected fuel efficiency of 18 km/l.
The Exter could get a CNG option after it has launch, which will be the 1.2-litre Bi-Fuel which produces 67.72 bhp and 95 Nm of torque with 5-speed Manual Transmission only and no Automatic Transmission.

As you can see at the safety features, the Exter misses out on Traction Control feature but not the Tata Punch.

No official update on the pricing of the Exter, only name and design sketch has been revealed by Hyundai, but however, more information about the car will be revealed in the coming days. As for the Tata Punch, it literally 30 variants on offer as the starting price is Rs. 7.09 (on-road) for the ‘Pure’ variant and goes all the way up to Rs. 10.99 lakh for the ‘Creative IRA’ with Automatic Transmission and Dual tone option.
