Hyundai earlier today revealed that it’ll be launching a new SUV in India later this year. It is codenamed Ai3 and it’ll rival the Tata Punch. But let’s compare and see which of these has the upper hand.

The Tata Punch and the upcoming sub-compact SUV in India codenamed by Hyundai as Ai3, the dimensions of the two are compared. The Tata Punch has a length of 3827mm, which is 232mm more than the Ai3 Length of 3595mm. The Ai3 has 1742mm width that is less than the 1742mm width of Tata Punch. The Ai3 has a height of 1575mm which is less than 40mm of height Tata Punch has to offer.
The Ai3 has 2400mm of wheelbase that is 45mm shorter than the Punch’s 2445mm wheelbase. The ground clearance of the Punch is 187mm while for the Ai3, it is not known yet. Tata Punch as a boot capacity of 366 litres whereas the Ai3 has 301 litres of Boot Space. The Fuel Tank Capacity of Ai3 is 35 litres which is 2 litres less than the Punch’s 37-litre. The Kerb and Gross Weight of the Ai3 is not known yet, but the Punch has 1,070 kg Kerb Weight and 1,460 kg Gross Vehicle Weight.

The Hyundai Ai3 is based on the i10 Nios platform and therefore, it might have only one petrol engine. The 1.2-litre Kappa Engine that produces 81.8 bhp and 113.8 Nm of torque paired to a 5-speed Manual Transmission and 5-speed Automatic Transmission or as Hyundai likes to call it, “Smart Auto” and offers a fuel efficiency of 20.1 km/l.
The Tata Punch on the other hand, has the 1.2-litre Revoltron petrol engine that puts out 117.74 bhp and 115 Nm of torque paired a 5-speed Manual Transmission and 5-speed Automatic Transmission with a fuel efficiency of 20.9 km/l. The Punch can go from 0 – 100 kmph in around 16 seconds at a top speed of 150 kmph.
The Hyundai Ai3 and the Tata Punch has features such as Automatic Climate controls, alloy wheels, touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, adjustable headlamps, cruise control, projector headlamps, and LED DRLs. However, Tata Punch doesn’t have ventilated seats which the Hyundai Ai3 will have.
In safety, both cars get airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, reverse parking camera, ESC, and ISOFIX anchorages. The Tata Punch gets dual airbags whereas for the Hyundai’s Ai3, we have to wait to find out how many airbags it will get. Also, the Ai3 will also get few ADAS features such as lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and blind spot detection while no ADAS or similar feature for the Punch.

Tata Punch has literally 30 variants on offer as the starting price is Rs. 7.09 (on-road) for the ‘Pure’ variant and goes all the way up to Rs. 10.99 lakh for the ‘Creative IRA’ with Automatic Transmission and Dual tone option. Meanwhile, the pricing for the Hyundai Ai3 hasn’t been revealed but it is expected to start at Rs. 6 lakh for the entry-level variant.
