Tata’s new SUV with new Petrol powertrain and lower pricing could benefit and help attract more sales!
Tata Motors, already busy with models like the Harrier EV, Safari EV, and the Sierra in both EV and ICE variants, has been spotted testing a new three-row SUV. From the spy shots, it’s evident that the SUV is the Safari. Interestingly, it appears to be the petrol-powered version under testing, as suggested by the front fascia details, rather than the EV variant.

Tata Safari Petrol: Key Details
Tata Motors launched its flagship SUVs, the Safari and Harrier, in October last year with a diesel-only powertrain. However, both models have been averaging sales of around 2,000 units per month, which is below the company’s expectations. To compete effectively with its primary rival, the Mahindra XUV700, Tata Motors is planning to introduce a petrol variant of the Safari, and Harrier, expected to launch in 2025.
A camouflaged test mule of the Tata Safari was recently spotted at night undergoing testing which will be of a petrol variant. At the Auto Expo last year, Tata Motors showcased its 1.5L Turbo Petrol engine, which features an aluminum structure for reduced weight and improved rigidity.
The 1.5L Turbo Petrol engine, set to power the Safari and Harrier has the following specs:
- Power: 168 bhp
- Torque: 280 Nm
- Transmission: 6-speed Manual and 7-speed DCT

In Comparison to its rival, Mahindra XUV700 gets the 2.0 L Turbo Petrol engine which makes 197 BHP, and 380 NM Torque with 6 Speed Manual and Automatic Transmission choices. Now it may seem, the power and torque of Tata’s 1.5 L Turbo petrol engine is on the lower side, they could increase the output further.
The petrol variants of the both the Safari and the Harrier is unlikely to receive any significant exterior or interior design changes. Additionally, new features are not expected to be introduced with this variant.
Final Thoughts
It is expected that Tata Motors might unveil the petrol variants of the Safari and Harrier alongside alongside their EV variants at the Bharat Mobility Expo which will be held in January 2025.
The introduction of the petrol-powered Safari and Harrier could expand Tata Motors’ appeal, especially among buyers seeking a refined and versatile SUV. While the specifications may appear modest compared to rivals like the XUV700, Tata’s lower pricing over its current diesel-only powered price – Harrier from Rs. 14.99 Lakh and Safari at Rs. 15.49 Lakh – could make these models strong contenders in their segment.
