Maruti Suzuki is set to launch an affordable SUV codenamed “Y43” in 2026-2027, aiming to compete with Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch, filling gaps in their SUV portfolio. The compact SUV is expected to feature a 1.2L petrol engine, optional CNG, and range of features to be competitive in this segment.
Even though Maruti Suzuki has only limited SUVs in segment, Maruti has still managed to have a big impact with its SUV like the Brezza, Grand Vitara, Fronx, etc. Now, they’re developing a new affordable SUV which will compete with the likes of Hyundai Exter, and Tata’s Punch. The SUV is codenamed as “Y43” and it sits below the Brezza in their line-up.

This new SUV launch for now is planned to be in 2026 and 2027 since Maruti also has another SUV in development in the Rs. 15 – Rs. 25 Lakh category which is expected to be out in 2025 from their new upcoming Kharkhoda plant. Maruti is trying to fill the gaps in its portfolio and it hopes to fill these gaps through new affordable SUVs.The new Exter-rival SUV from Maruti could design inspired from the Baleno, or Brezza while the cabin may look like the typical Maruti cars from recent launches like Brezza, Baleno, Fronx, and more. The SUV will measure just above 3.5 M in length, wheelbase likely to be 2.4 Meters, and could sport 14 or 15-inch alloy wheels. To keep the SUV on the affordable side as much as possible, Maruti may opt for Halogen headlamps and tail lamps for all trims except for the top trims, it may get the LED treatment.In Engine Options, it’s likely it’ll get the new 1.2 L Z Series Petrol Engine with 5 Speed Manual and Automatic Gearbox Options, and will also be available in CNG for higher fuel efficiency. Regarding the features, it may not be the same as Exter or Punch, but Maruti could offer 7-inch SmartPlay Pro+ Infotainment with Wireless Apple Carplay & Android Auto, Automatic Climate Control, Rear AC Vents, Wireless Charging Pad, Analog Instrument Cluster with 3-inch TFT Display, possibly a Sunroof, and few more.In the end, we’ll have to wait for an official confirmation from Maruti as to what features its Exter, Punch-rival SUV will be getting.
