The recently-launched New Hyundai Alcazar just got a new rival in the form of the Dacia Bigster SUV which upon its way to India will be known as Renault Bigster.

Dacia, Renault’s global budget brand, has officially unveiled the much-anticipated Dacia Bigster ahead of the Paris Motor Show. This new SUV is based on the popular Renault Duster but comes as a larger, 7-seater version, which could soon make its way to the Indian market under the Renault brand. With its spacious design, modern features, and multiple powertrain options, the Bigster is set to rival established SUVs like the Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra XUV700, and Tata Safari in the Indian market.

Dacia Bigster: Dimensions and Design

The Dacia Bigster is a substantial upgrade over the Renault Duster. It measures 4,570 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width, and 1,710 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. This makes it 230 mm longer and its wheelbase 43 mm longer than the new-generation Duster. Ground clearance stands at an impressive 220 mm, making the Bigster suitable for both urban roads and off-road environments.

Dacia has retained much of the design elements from the 2021 Bigster concept. The SUV boasts a rugged, muscular look with a flat bonnet and pronounced wheel arches. The exterior is highlighted by Y-shaped LED headlamps and tail lamps, a glossy black grille, a studded lower grille, and sporty alloy wheels. Wheel sizes range between 17 to 19 inches, depending on the variant. The rear also sports the distinctive Y-shaped tail lamps, giving it a modern touch. Blacked-out pillars, roof rails, and thick body cladding further enhance the SUV’s tough, adventurous appeal.

Interior Features and Technology

Inside, the Dacia Bigster offers a refined cabin with several tech-driven features. The SUV revealed by Dacia is a 5-seater version, but a 7-seater variant is expected for markets like India. The spacious boot offers a massive 667-litre capacity in the 5-seater version, making it highly practical for long trips.

The dashboard features a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, complemented by either a 7-inch or 10-inch digital instrument cluster, depending on the variant. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), wireless charging, a panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate, dual-zone climate control, and a powered driver’s seat are among the premium features available. The Bigster also includes the Arkamys audio system, enhancing the overall in-car entertainment experience.

Powertrain Options

Dacia has equipped the Bigster with a range of powertrain options, focusing on hybrid and eco-friendly technologies. Three main options are available: a mild-hybrid petrol, a strong-hybrid petrol, and a dual-fuel petrol-LPG variant.

1. Mild-Hybrid 1.2L Turbo-Petrol: This version features a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine that generates 138 bhp and is paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. A 6-speed manual transmission sends power to the front wheels, and an optional all-wheel-drive system is also available. The AWD version offers driving modes like Snow, Mud/Sand, Off-Road, Normal, Eco, and hill descent control.
2. Hybrid 155: This is the most powerful option for the Bigster, combining a 106 bhp petrol engine with two electric motors that together produce 153 bhp. The hybrid system includes a 1.4 kWh battery, and the power is sent to the front wheels through a 4-speed automatic transmission for the petrol engine and a 2-speed automatic for the electric motor.
3. Dual-Fuel LPG Variant: The Bigster also offers a dual-fuel option with LPG and petrol. The 1.2-litre engine, also with mild-hybrid assistance, produces 138 bhp. This variant boasts an impressive range of up to 1,450 km between refuels, thanks to its 50-litre petrol tank and 49-litre LPG tank.

Notably, while Dacia has phased out diesel engines in Europe, the Indian market could still see the Renault Bigster offered with a diesel option, depending on consumer demand and local emission norms.

Dacia Bigster vs. Rivals

With its larger dimensions and seating capacity, the Dacia Bigster will compete directly with SUVs like the Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra XUV700, and Tata Safari in the Indian market. The Bigster stands out with its rugged design, hybrid powertrain options, and extensive list of features, making it a strong contender in the mid-size SUV segment.

As Renault plans to introduce the Bigster in India after launching the new-generation Duster in the second half of 2025, this SUV is expected to make waves in the Indian market.
