Spy shots of Volkswagen’s upcoming SUV, the Tera, have emerged, showcasing the vehicle in rugged testing conditions on Argentina’s dirt roads. This latest sighting has fueled speculation that the Tera could be headed to the Indian market, filling the void left by the Polo’s discontinuation. Set to target the competitive sub-4m SUV segment, Tera is expected to compete with popular models like Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, and Hyundai Venue.
The Tera was recently captured testing on Argentina’s iconic Ruta 40, with the SUV seen maneuvering through rough terrains and bridge detours. Despite being heavily camouflaged, the test model revealed several design elements. According to Volkswagen Argentina’s General Manager, Martin Massimino, the Tera is set to launch in Argentina in 2025 after a Brazilian debut, with a projected price range between 27 to 31 million pesos (Rs. 16.5 lakh to Rs. 19 lakh).
The Tera adopts Volkswagen’s MQB-A0 platform, shared with models like the Polo, T-Cross, and Nivus, ensuring a compact design suited for challenging terrains, a feature valued in Latin America. The SUV sports a unique front fascia, with LED headlights, elevated DRLs, and a prominent bumper resembling the Euro-spec Tiguan. Flat door panels and a streamlined side profile inspired by the Tiguan emphasize a modern, clutter-free look, while fender cladding and 17-inch alloy wheels enhance its rugged appeal. The rear showcases edgy tail lamps connected by a black strip, adding to the vehicle’s distinct styling.
With a wheelbase of 2,566 mm, identical to that of the Polo, the Tera aims to offer a compact yet versatile package that can handle both urban and off-road environments. Volkswagen appears to be aiming for a robust entry into the sub-4m segment with a design that balances style and functionality.
The Tera is expected to share its powertrain with Skoda’s Kylaq, featuring a 1.0-liter TSI petrol engine that produces 114 BHP and 178 Nm of torque. Transmission options are likely to include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. Opting for a single engine variant allows Volkswagen to streamline costs associated with design, testing, and emission compliance, potentially making the Tera more affordable.
In India, the Tera is expected to have a starting price around Rs. 8 lakh, positioning it competitively in the sub-4m SUV market. Rivals will include bestsellers such as the Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet, and Hyundai Venue, along with Skoda’s Kylaq. In international markets, the Tera will compete with models like the Renault Kardian and Fiat Pulse.
The Tera’s entry into the highly competitive entry-level ICE SUV segment comes as Volkswagen shifts focus amid a slower-than-expected uptake of EVs in some markets, including Europe. While EV expansion remains a long-term goal, the immediate focus appears to be on accessible, volume-driven models like the Tera to support Volkswagen’s revival strategy in key markets.
