Tata Harrier and Safari: A Benchmark in Safety
In a significant achievement last year, the Tata Safari and Harrier secured a five-star Global NCAP rating for both adult and child occupant protection, recording the highest scores in the #SaferCarsForIndia campaign. Demonstrating their dedication to continuous improvement, Tata Motors submitted these models for additional Safer Choice conformity tests. The vehicles excelled, meeting stringent performance and volume requirements for advanced safety features like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), speed assistance, and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) systems.
How to Qualify for the Global NCAP Safer Choice Award?
The Safer Choice Award, introduced by Global NCAP in 2018 and updated in August 2024, is a symbol of excellence in vehicle safety. To qualify, a car model must meet the following criteria:
- Five-Star Rating for Adult Occupant Protection: The vehicle must achieve a five-star rating in Global NCAP’s adult occupant protection test.
- Five-Star Rating for Child Occupant Protection: Similarly, the vehicle must also secure a five-star rating for child occupant protection.
- Speed Assistance System: The car should include a speed assistance system and achieve a full score in Global NCAP’s test criteria.
- Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB): The vehicle must feature AEB for both car-to-car and vulnerable road users, complying with UN regulatory performance standards.
- Blind Spot Detection (BSD): BSD must be available as a stand-alone option and meet Global NCAP’s performance requirements.
Tata Harrier and Safari Crash Test Rating
The Tata Harrier and Safari have recently been tested by Global NCAP, achieving an impressive 5-star safety rating. These SUVs are the first Tata models to be evaluated under the updated, more stringent testing protocols. Notably, their scores cannot be directly compared to vehicles tested under the older standards, such as the Mahindra XUV700.
In the tests, both SUVs scored 33.05 out of 34 points for adult occupant protection, receiving high marks for head, neck, chest, and pelvis protection in various impact scenarios. The bodyshell was rated as stable, capable of withstanding additional loads.
For child occupant protection, the Harrier and Safari earned 45 out of 49 points, including perfect scores for Child Restraint System (CRS) installation and dynamic performance. The SUVs were tested using rearward-facing child dummies secured with ISOFIX anchorages, which provided excellent protection in both frontal and side impact crashes.
