Tesla is all set to enter in India with a formal announcement expected to be made at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in January 2024 where they’ll be signing an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to make it official.

Tesla is poised to make its grand entry into the Indian market with a manufacturing pant in Gujarat scheduled for the upcoming year. Negotiations for the first manufacturing unit of the electric vehicle (EV) giant in India are in the final stages and are expected to conclude soon, as per reports in the media. A formal announcement regarding Tesla’s manufacturing unit in the state is expected during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit scheduled for January 2024.

Gujarat has long been recognized as a strategic location for fostering a conducive business environment and is already home to manufacturing units of established automakers such as Maruti Suzuki. As per the reports, the potential locations for the Tesla’s manufacturing plant could be the Sanand. It’s also worth mentioning that Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors already has a manufacturing plant in Gujarat.
There’s no official statements from either Tesla or the Gujarat Government, but the Health Minister and Government Spokesperson Rushikesh Patel expressed optimism regarding Elon Musk’s potential investment in Gujarat. There are reports that suggests that Tesla is expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. Tesla earlier had said that it plans to setup a manufacturing plant for the batteries in India along with the Electric Cars. They had hinted the location could get finalised near the end of the year.
Additionally, Tesla is also exploring other lands for ports to export EVs from India to other countries. The Kandla-Mundra port is the closest port to the Sanand location in Gujarat, and although the Sanand location hasn’t been finalised yet, the Government has offered the Becharaji, and the Dholera has the two additional options for them to consider.
Tesla doesn’t sell EVs in India due to high import duties. Moreover, they were planning on launching an affordable Tesla for the Indian Market which is expected to be price under Rs. 20 Lakhs. With this manufacturing plant, Tesla plans on producing an affordable EV for India could soon become an reality.
