Tata Motors, were aiming to enhance its presence in the expanding pickup market, and back in 2022, they had launched the Intra V20, a dual-fuel vehicle that runs on petrol and CNG. According to Tata, the Intra V20 CNG were introduced to help the company gain ground in the small commercial vehicles’ market. At that time, Tata Motors held an estimated 40% of the overall market share.
Executive Director at Tata Motors, Girish Wagh had mentioned that the introduction of these vehicles assists the company in increasing its market share but also targeting it toward the agriculture, poultry, and dairy sectors, in addition to expanding delivery requirements of FMCGs, e-commerce, and logistic sectors. Moreover, the Intra V20, India’s first bi-fuel (CNG + petrol) commercial vehicle had a payload capacity of 1,000 KG, had an impressive range of 700 KM in a single filling.
Vinay Pathak, VP, product line, SCV and PU, at Tata Motors had remarked that prior to the implementation of BS IV, the cost of a diesel vehicle had been significantly lower than the cost of a CNG car. The cost of fuel and CNG had then practically reached parity with the establishment of the BSVI emission standards. “The cost-effectiveness of producing a CNG vehicle using a petrol engine route had been enhanced by the vehicle’s better efficiency if we chose that path,” he had pointed out.
