Stellantis is looking to bet on the Chinese EV Brand, Leapmotor, to gain a strong foothold in India!
Stellantis is strengthening its India lineup with the confirmed entry of the Chinese electric vehicle brand, Leapmotor. While many were hoping for Alfa Romeo’s arrival, Stellantis is instead bringing in Leapmotor as part of its strategy to gain a larger share in India’s growing EV market. Leapmotor’s entry aligns with Stellantis’ long-term commitment to innovation, sustainability, and making smart electric mobility more accessible. India’s increasing demand for EVs makes it a key market, and Stellantis is aiming to offer tech-rich and future-ready electric vehicles under the Leapmotor brand.
Leapmotor to Focus on SUVs and Volume Drivers
Globally, Leapmotor has gained significant traction in a short time. In 2024 alone, the brand shipped close to three lakh units — double its previous year’s figures. Now, Leapmotor is preparing to bring this momentum to India, with a focus on SUVs that suit local buyer preferences. Models like the C10 and C16 SUVs are expected to headline the India portfolio, helping to position Leapmotor as a premium brand. The compact and affordable T03 city hatchback may also be introduced to boost volumes and establish a strong base for future launches.
One of Leapmotor’s most notable products is the B10 SUV, priced under $18,000 globally and equipped with smart-driving features and advanced lidar systems. The B10 saw 8,000 deliveries within just 13 days of its debut, showing the brand’s strong market response. Leapmotor’s electric range also includes the C10, which offers up to 950 km range, and the C10 REEV — a variant with a petrol-powered range extender, offering a combined range of 970 km on full charge and fuel tank.
Stellantis’ Global Backing and Local Vision
In 2023, Stellantis took a 21% stake in Leapmotor with a $1.6 billion investment. This led to the creation of Leapmotor International, a joint venture with Stellantis as the majority stakeholder. This partnership boosts Leapmotor’s ability to scale internationally and expand production, including plans for localised manufacturing in Europe by next year.
With its India entry, Leapmotor joins a growing list of foreign EV brands including Tesla and VinFast, who are preparing to compete in the Indian electric vehicle market.
