It’s game-over Mahindra XEV.9E as Tata just showcased it’s SUV’s off-road capabilities!

Tata Motors will officially launch the Tata Harrier EV in India on June 3 at 2 PM. This marks a significant step for the brand as the Harrier EV becomes its first all-wheel drive model since the Safari Storme was discontinued in 2020. The SUV has been spotted in camouflaged form multiple times, and teaser videos have now confirmed key features and capabilities.

Over 600 km range, dual motor setup and new-gen EV platform

The Harrier EV is underpinned by Tata’s Gen 2 EV architecture, which is a major revision of the OMEGA Arc platform. It will feature a dual-motor setup with one motor powering each axle, delivering true all-wheel drive performance. This makes it the first mainstream EV in India to offer a 4WD layout. Tata has revealed that the combined peak torque output will be over 500 Nm.

The electric SUV will be offered with two battery options, with a 75 kWh pack expected for the higher trims. While earlier statements indicated a range of over 500 km, the latest teasers suggest that the Tata Harrier EV will deliver more than 600 km on a single charge. It will also support fast DC charging along with vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionalities for added practicality.

Advanced off-road features

To enhance its off-road capabilities, the Harrier EV comes equipped with terrain modes such as Snow, Sand and Rock Crawl. These can be accessed via a rotary drive selector placed on the center console. There is also an off-road assist mode, functioning similarly to an off-road creep feature that helps the vehicle move steadily over uneven surfaces.

The SUV also gets a transparent bonnet view, enabled through its 360-degree camera system, allowing drivers to see obstacles below the vehicle. This feature is typically available only in high-end premium SUVs, adding to the Harrier EV’s appeal as a well-rounded electric SUV for all terrains.

Feature-loaded interior with EV-specific updates

Inside the cabin, the Harrier EV will share its layout with the ICE version but includes several EV-specific changes. It features a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster that displays EV-specific data and animations.

The drive modes include Eco and Boost, with the Boost mode likely functioning as an electric low-range gear equivalent. The interior package ensures that it remains as tech-rich as its diesel counterpart, while offering the additional benefits of electrification.

Expected price and rivals

The Tata Harrier EV is expected to be priced between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom). It will become the brand’s new flagship electric SUV, positioned above the Curvv EV. While the top-end versions are likely to get the dual-motor AWD setup, lower variants may come with a single motor configuration.

At launch, the Harrier EV will rival the Mahindra XUV.e9 and the BYD Atto 3. With over 600 km of driving range, dual motor all-wheel drive, off-road capabilities and modern features, the Tata Harrier EV is set to make a strong impact in the premium electric SUV space.
