For the first time in a very long time, Toyota Hyryder has outsold the Grand Vitara in sales in May 2025!

In May 2025, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder has managed to outsell its sibling, the Maruti Grand Vitara, in a surprising twist in the compact SUV segment. While both SUVs share the same platform, powertrains, and features, the Hyryder recorded significantly better sales last month.

May 2025 Sales – Toyota Hyryder Takes the Lead

Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder sold 7,573 units in May 2025, marking a massive 94% YoY growth over the 3,906 units sold in May 2024. Compared to April 2025’s 4,642 units, the MoM growth stood at a strong 63%. On the other hand, the Maruti Grand Vitara saw a sharp 47% YoY decline, with sales falling from 9,736 units in May 2024 to 5,195 units in May 2025. Even MoM, the Grand Vitara registered a 27% drop, down from 7,154 units in April 2025.

Powertrain and Features

Both the Toyota Hyryder and Maruti Grand Vitara are powered by the same engine options. The first is a 1.5 L 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine delivering 101.64 BHP and 136.8 NM torque, available with a 5-speed MT or 6-speed AT. It returns a fuel efficiency between 19.20 – 21.11 KMPL. The second is a more fuel-efficient 1.5 L 3-cylinder petrol hybrid with 114 BHP and 141 NM torque, paired to an eCVT transmission and offering 27.97 KMPL. The third option is a 1.5 L CNG variant with 86 BHP and 121.5 NM, mated to a 5-speed manual and offering 26.6 KM/KG.

Both SUVs are also well-equipped with features like panoramic sunroof, front ventilated seats, powered driver seat, ambient lighting, 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and 7-inch digital instrument cluster. Safety features are equally robust on both models, offering 6 airbags, 360-degree camera, electronic parking brake with auto hold, HUD, and TPMS.

How Did Toyota Hyryder Outsell the Grand Vitara?

Despite being almost identical in specs and equipment, Toyota Hyryder has taken the lead, and the possible key reason could be that in May 2025, Maruti discontinued the CNG variants of the Grand Vitara. This move may have directly impacted its sales, especially since CNG trims contributed a decent share of its monthly volumes. As evident from the May 2025 numbers, Hyryder outsold Grand Vitara by a significant margin – likely because it continued to offer all three powertrain choices.

Final Thoughts

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder’s strong May 2025 sales performance shows a shift in buyer preference within the shared-platform SUV space. Although the Maruti Grand Vitara still holds a strong brand value, Toyota’s momentum suggests it is gaining ground steadily, especially in the hybrid and CNG markets.
