The Volkswagen Golf GTI, one of the most awaited performance hatchbacks, is set to debut in India later this month. Select dealers have already begun taking unofficial bookings, and the car is expected to carry a price tag between Rs. 40 – 45 lakh (ex-showroom). Deliveries are expected to start from August. This marks the return of the GTI badge to India after the 3-door Polo GTI was introduced in limited numbers. The new Golf GTI will also be a rare offering, with only 250 units allocated in the first batch.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI will arrive in India as a completely built unit (CBU), carrying a premium price tag of around ₹40–45 lakh (ex-showroom). While it lacks a direct rival, its pricing puts it in the same league as the Mini Cooper S (₹44.90 lakh). However, given the challenges Volkswagen faced with the Polo GTI due to its high price, the Golf GTI may also have a niche appeal among enthusiasts.
Under the hood, the Golf GTI packs a 2.0L EA888 TSI turbo-petrol engine, producing 265 bhp and 370 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, allowing a 0-100 km/h sprint in just 5.9 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h. Driving dynamics are enhanced by an electronically controlled front-axle differential lock, progressive steering, and optional adaptive suspension, ensuring precise handling and stability.
The Golf GTI blends sporty aesthetics with modern technology. Inside, it features a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with updated graphics and ChatGPT-powered voice assistant, along with a digital instrument cluster with GTI-specific displays.
Exterior highlights include Matrix LED headlamps, an illuminated VW logo, a sleek bonnet with an LED strip, a dual-tone roof spoiler, and 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, adding to its aggressive stance. Inside, the GTI retains its signature tartan seat upholstery, premium cabin materials, and a push-to-start button for added convenience. Safety features include red brake calipers and an advanced LED lighting system, ensuring both style and functionality.
Volkswagen’s Polo GTI, introduced in 2016 as a CBU, featured a 1.8L TSI engine producing 190 bhp and 320 Nm, with a 0-100 km/h time of 7.2 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h. However, its high price limited sales, leading to discounts before it was discontinued in 2020. The Golf GTI now aims to rekindle the GTI legacy in India, offering a more powerful and feature-rich experience.
