Ford is evaluating a comeback to the Indian market with the relaunch of the Ford Everest. The company is considering introducing the powerful 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine in the SUV to position it as a premium offering. This move aims to boost the model’s desirability, especially with an expected higher price tag. Along with the V6, Ford is likely to offer a 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine option to cater to a wider range of customers.
Ford Everest to Get 3.0L V6 Diesel in India
The 3.0L V6 diesel engine is a powerhouse that delivers 247 bhp at 3,250rpm and a massive 600Nm of torque from 1,750-2,250rpm. This engine is currently manufactured at Ford’s Struandale Engine Plant in South Africa, where both inline and V-type engines are produced. The V6 engine uses a single large variable nozzle turbocharger, dual overhead camshafts, and a forged-steel crankshaft for enhanced durability and performance.
This V6 diesel engine already powers the Ford Everest and Ranger pickup truck in markets like Australia and North America. It is known for its impressive towing capacity, often used for hauling heavy loads like boats. Although towing isn’t a major requirement in India, the engine’s high torque and effortless performance will make it a standout feature for the Ford Everest.
2.0L Twin-Turbo Diesel to Be Offered in Base Variants
In addition to the V6, Ford is likely to offer a 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine for the base variants of the India-spec Ford Everest. This engine is expected to be sourced from Ford’s Sanand plant in Gujarat, where the 2.0L diesel is already produced for export markets. The smaller engine will cater to customers looking for a more affordable option while still delivering strong performance.
Performance and Competition
The reintroduction of a V6 diesel engine aligns with Ford’s previous strategy of offering multiple diesel engine options in India. In the pre-BS6 era, Ford had successfully offered 2.2L 4-cylinder and 3.2L 5-cylinder diesel engines in the Everest. The new V6 will give Ford a competitive edge over rivals like the Toyota Fortuner, upcoming MG Gloster facelift, and Isuzu MU-X.
The V6 engine promises smooth power delivery, refinement, and effortless performance, which suits the premium image of the Everest. The high torque will provide exceptional performance for long drives, making the SUV an ideal choice for adventure enthusiasts.
Ford’s Return to India: What to Expect
Ford has been conducting market analysis and testing in India, as indicated by various spy shots of the Everest. Although an official launch date has not been confirmed, Ford is gearing up to start export-only production at its Chennai plant. There are also speculations about Ford launching CBU models and locally produced electric cars in the near future.
The return of the Ford Everest with a 3.0L V6 diesel engine could mark a significant comeback for the brand in India. It will help Ford compete more effectively in the full-size SUV segment and cater to customers looking for a powerful, refined, and feature-packed SUV.
