Honda is set to introduce its advanced E-Clutch technology in India with the CB650R and CBR650R, bringing a more versatile and user-friendly riding experience. This E-Clutch system, already available in global markets, offers a combination of manual and automatic clutch control, making it a game-changer for riders of all skill levels.
Honda CB650R and CBR650R E-Clutch – How It Works
The E-Clutch system, first showcased at the 2023 EICMA, is designed to allow riders to enjoy clutchless gear shifts without compromising on manual control. Riders can switch between automatic and manual clutch operations, providing flexibility based on riding conditions. The E-Clutch operates through an Electronic Control Unit (ECU), sensors, and actuators that automatically engage or disengage the clutch.
For instance, when starting or stopping the bike, the E-Clutch automatically engages or disengages to prevent engine stalls. During gear shifts, the system ensures smooth transitions without needing the rider to manually pull the clutch lever. However, those who prefer traditional control can still use the clutch lever whenever they want.
The system adds around 2.8 kg to the bike’s weight, with the CB650R weighing approximately 211 kg with E-Clutch. The existing clutch and transmission components remain, ensuring the bikes maintain their familiar performance. Additionally, riders can customize the clutch feel, choosing from soft, medium, or hard resistance for both upshifts and downshifts.
Performance and Specifications
Both the Honda CB650R and CBR650R continue to use the 649cc inline four-cylinder, liquid-cooled DOHC engine. This engine produces 94 bhp and 63 Nm of peak torque, paired with a 6-speed gearbox. The bikes retain their premium suspension setup, including Showa SFF USD forks at the front and a mono-shock with 10-stage preload adjustment at the rear.
Braking duties are managed by a 310 mm dual disc setup with 4-piston calipers at the front and a 240 mm single disc with a single-piston caliper at the rear. The motorcycles ride on 17-inch wheels wrapped in 120/70 front and 180/55 rear tyres. The CB650R and CBR650R also feature a 5-inch TFT instrument display with Bluetooth connectivity.
Enhanced Riding Experience with E-Clutch
The E-Clutch system is particularly beneficial in stop-and-go traffic, reducing the risk of engine stalls and minimizing rider fatigue. New riders benefit from hassle-free clutch control, while experienced riders can switch to manual mode for a more engaging experience. The E-Clutch also enhances the quick-shifter’s performance, making aggressive riding smoother.
Visually, the E-Clutch-equipped models retain their existing design but will feature E-Clutch branding for easy identification. The clutch case will be slightly more pronounced to accommodate the new system.
Expected Pricing and Launch in India
The Honda CB650R and CBR650R with E-Clutch are expected to be priced slightly higher than their standard counterparts. The current CB650R is priced at around Rs. 9.20 lakh (ex-showroom), while the CBR650R is available at Rs. 9.99 lakh. The E-Clutch variant is expected to command a premium over the standard models.
Although Honda has not officially announced the launch date, the teaser indicates that the E-Clutch-equipped CB650R and CBR650R could debut in India soon. This move will further enhance Honda’s premium motorcycle lineup in the country.
