Volkswagen Polo’s potential comeback, aligned with the brand’s innovative strategies, including SUV and EV development, remains of interest post-discontinuation.
VW Polo GTI: Return Possible?
The Polo was launched back in 2010, and emerged as Volkswagen’s top-selling car in India, praised for its agile handling, peppy performance, and robust build quality. However, it was discontinued in 2022 due to various factors, including low sales volumes and the emergence of more feature-rich competitors.

Volkswagen Polo’s potential comeback, aligned with the brand’s innovative strategies, including SUV and EV development, remains of interest post-discontinuation.But Despite its discontinuation, the Polo still remains a beloved choice among enthusiasts, often prompting inquiries about its potential return in India. Volkswagen’s Brand Director, Ashish Gupta, addressed this topic at the VW Annual Brand Conference 2024, discussing potential avenues for the Polo’s return.
At present there are no plans for a Polo relaunch though it remains a possibility for the future. Among the options under consideration is reintroducing the Polo in either SUV or EV format. However, a revival of the Polo in its original form seems unlikely due to Volkswagen’s alignment with the India 2.0 strategy, focusing on the premium segment and mirroring global strategies.
The success of the India 2.0 project is evident through popular models like the Taigun SUV and Virtus Sedan. Reintroducing the Polo in its previous form might be viewed as regressive, and its sales potential remains uncertain. Volkswagen’s focus remains on the heavily localized MQB-A0-IN platform, utilized by Taigun and the Virtus.
While the 6th Gen Polo is sold in other international markets, Volkswagen’s current focus in India lies on models like the Taigun and Virtus. As part of the India 2.5 strategy, facelift versions of models like the Taigun and Virtus are expected in 2025, aiming to enhance feature offerings with additions like ADAS and a 360° camera.
Volkswagen is also prioritizing EVs, as demonstrated by the unveiling of the ID.4 all-electric vehicle at the VW Annual Brand Conference 2024, expected to launch in India later this year.
