
This time we’re going to do a comparison of the two hatchbacks, the Tata Altroz against the Maruti Suzuki’s Baleno from Nexa to see which is the best hatchback.
Tata Altroz vs Maruti Baleno – Exterior and Interior


At the front as you can see, the Altroz has Halogen headlamps with blacked out grille and the chrome line going from the headlamps to another headlamps with fog lamps. Moving to the side, it has cladding at the bottom window frame with 15-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, it has rear wipers with LED taillamps and rear bumper blacked out.


As you can see, the Baleno has a much bigger grille over the old-gen with chrome grille running at the bottom of the grille. The LED headlamps has Audi’s Matrix light LED DRL’s and it has LED fog lamps as well. Moving to the side, it has chrome line at the bottom of the window frame, chrome finish for the door handles, and 15-inch alloy wheels. At the rear it has LED taillamps and rear wiper on the rear windscreen.


Both the cars have the three-spoke multi-function steering wheel with Altroz having semi-digital instrument cluster while the Baleno has Analog instrument cluster with TFT unit between them. The Altroz has 7-inch infotainment system with AC vents right below them where as the Baleno has the 9-inch Infotainment System and AC vents right below them. The Baleno has the dual-tone interior option which the Altroz doesn’t. The Altroz has 8-speaker sound system where as the Baleno has 6-speaker Arkamy’s Sound System.

As you can see at the Dimensions table, the Altroz and the Baleno have the same length of 3990mm. However, the Altroz has width of 1755mm while the Baleno has a width of 1745mm which is 10mm shorter than the Altroz. The Altroz has a height of 1523mm which is 23mm more than the Baleno’s 1500mm height. The Baleno has a wheelbase of 2520mm which is 19mm longer than the Altroz’s 2501mm wheelbase. The Altroz has a ground clearance of 165mm which is 5mm less than the Baleno’s 170mm ground clearance.
The Baleno has a boot space of 318 litres which is 27 litres less than the Altroz’s boot space of 345 litres. Both the cars have a fuel tank of 37 litres. The Kerb Weight of Altroz is 1,115 kg which is 155 kg heavier than the Baleno’s kerb weight of 960 kg.

Tata Altroz has one petrol and one diesel engines on offer. The 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine produces 88.77 bhp and 200 Nm of torque paired to 5-speed Manual Transmission only and no Automatic Transmission on offer. It has fuel efficiency of 23.64 km/l. The other is the 1.2-litre i-Turbo petrol engine which produces 108.49 bhp and 140 Nm of torque paired to a 5-speed Manual Transmission and 6-speed DCT Transmission with a fuel efficiency of 18.5 km/l.
Meanwhile, the Baleno has one petrol and one CNG engines on offer. The 1.2-litre petrol engine produced 88.50 bhp and 113 Nm of torque mated to a 5-speed Manual Transmission which gives fuel efficiency of 22.35 km/l and 5-speed Automatic Transmission which offers fuel efficiency of 22.94 km/l. As you can see at the features table, the Baleno misses out on two features and that is the cooled glovebox and wireless charging. It also offers Fabric upholstery where as the Altroz is offering the Leather seats. The Altroz however has 7-inch infotainment system while the Baleno has 9-inch Infotainment system. Moreover, the Altroz has Halogen headlamps where as the Baleno has LED headlamps.

As you can see at the safety features table, the Altroz misses out on Cruise Control, Tyre-Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), automatic headlamps, heads-up display, and 360-degree camera instead it has reverse parking camera, and the Baleno has six airbags where as the Altroz has two airbags only. This makes Baleno a better choice over the Altroz in terms of features on offer.

The Tata Altroz starts at Rs. 7.27 lakh for the base XE petrol variant and goes all the way up to Rs. 12.28 lakh for the Diesel Dark Edition where as the Baleno starts at Rs. 7.54 lakh for the Sigma variant which is Rs. 27,000 more than the Altroz and goes all the way up to Rs. 11.17 lakh for the Alpha Automatic variant.

In the end, the decision to buy which car depends totally on you, however, we would recommend you to buy the Maruti Suzuki Baleno as it’s got slightly more feature and better safety features than the Altroz, however, you can buy the Altroz if you want as it’s got Global NCAP rating of 5-star.
