This Mahindra Thar Just Conquered a Flooded Road – Insane Grip!

A video has been going around the internet of a 3-Door Mahindra Thar navigating through flooded streets in Kerala. While the Thar does have a 650 mm wader wading capacity, it isn’t advisable as it can lead to hidden damage like engine hydro-lock, electrical failure, and rusting over time. It also increases the risk of accidents due to poor visibility, slippery roads, and submerged obstacles.

Mahindra Thar (3-Door) Water Wading Capacity

The Mahindra Thar 3-Door has a water wading capacity of 650 mm, allowing it to safely traverse through waterlogged areas without risking damage to critical components like the engine or cabin. Its high ground clearance, sealed electricals, and raised air intake enhance its ability to handle such conditions better than standard vehicles. Built on a rugged ladder-frame chassis and equipped with a 4×4 drivetrain, the Thar offers improved traction and stability, making it well-suited for wet and off-road environments.

Why Driving Thar in Flooded Conditions Isn’t Advisable (Even if It Survives)

While the Thar may technically handle flooded roads, doing so repeatedly or in deeper water poses serious risks:

  • Unseen Obstacles: Floodwater hides potholes, debris, and open manholes that can damage the suspension or lead to accidents.
  • Water Ingress Over Time: Prolonged exposure or deep water can still lead to leaks in door seals, electrical issues, and rusting, even if it seems fine after one drive.
  • Engine Hydro-locking: Water entering the air intake beyond safe limits can cause hydrostatic lock, severely damaging the engine.
  • Brake Fade: Wet brakes reduce stopping power, increasing the chances of accidents.
  • Contaminated Fluids: Water entering the differential or gearbox can contaminate oils, leading to long-term mechanical wear.
  • Void Warranty Claims: Manufacturer warranty may not cover flood-related damages if usage conditions are deemed abusive.

Final Thoughts

The Thar is built tough, but not flood-proof. Its off-road capability is a safety net—not a green light to wade through every waterlogged stretch. Use it wisely and avoid flood driving unless absolutely necessary.
