Xiaomi has officially unveiled its second electric vehicle and its first-ever electric SUV – the Xiaomi YU7, which is scheduled to go on sale in China by July 2025. Following the strong success of the SU7 electric sedan, which has already sold over 2.58 lakh units, Xiaomi is now stepping into the electric SUV space with a tech-loaded and performance-driven offering that directly challenges the Tesla Model Y.
The Xiaomi YU7 will be available in three variants – Standard (RWD), Pro (AWD), and Max (AWD). Each variant offers different performance levels, battery configurations, and driving ranges.
Variant | Drivetrain | Battery Type | Battery Capacity | Power Output | Claimed Range (CLTC) | 0–100 km/h |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Standard | RWD | LFP | 96.3 kWh | 320 PS / 528 Nm | 835 km | 5.88 sec |
Pro | AWD | LFP | 96.3 kWh | 496 PS / 690 Nm | 770 km | 4.27 sec |
Max | AWD | NCM | 101.7 kWh | 690 PS / 866 Nm | 760 km | 3.23 sec |
The Standard RWD version delivers the highest driving range of 835 km on a single charge. The Max AWD variant stands out with its rapid acceleration, reaching 0–100 km/h in just 3.23 seconds, outpacing the Tesla Model Y Performance, which achieves the same in 3.7 seconds.
The YU7 also supports 800V high-voltage silicon carbide architecture, enabling ultra-fast 5.2C charging. Xiaomi claims users can add up to 620 km of range in just 15 minutes, which is significantly quicker than Tesla’s charging capabilities.
Built on the brand’s Modena platform, the Xiaomi YU7 measures 4,999 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, 1,608 mm in height, and has a long wheelbase of 3,000 mm. The electric SUV gets a low drag coefficient of 0.245 Cd and features sleek design elements such as waterdrop-style LED headlamps, flush door handles, connected LED tail lamps, and a sporty tapering roofline. It rides on wheels measuring up to 20 inches and will be available in nine exterior colour options.
Inside, the YU7 offers a tech-rich and premium cabin with features like three retina-grade LED screens offering 108 PPD resolution, a 16.1-inch central touchscreen, a 1.1-metre ultra-wide head-up display, and a separate 6.68-inch control panel for managing AC, navigation, and music. Other highlights include Nappa leather upholstery, powered reclining seats up to 135 degrees, and a dedicated remote panel for entertainment and vehicle controls. The spacious interior provides ample headroom and legroom, even for passengers over 6 feet tall, making it suitable for long journeys.
On the safety front, the YU7 gets a comprehensive ADAS suite that comprises a LiDAR module, a 4D millimetre-wave radar, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and 11 HD cameras. These work in sync with the high-performance NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor™ platform. Xiaomi has also developed an in-house autonomous driving and safety software package to enhance driver assistance capabilities.
Feature | Xiaomi YU7 Max | Tesla Model Y Performance |
---|---|---|
Power | 690 PS | 510 PS |
0–100 km/h | 3.23 sec | 3.7 sec |
Range (Top Variant) | 760 km | 719 km (Long Range AWD) |
Charging (15 mins) | 620 km | ~260 km |
With better specs across range, performance, and charging speed, the YU7 could pose serious competition to Tesla in China. While Tesla has a global presence, Xiaomi is currently focused on the domestic market but is planning global expansion by 2027.
The Xiaomi YU7 electric SUV is a bold new contender in the EV space, packed with cutting-edge technology, top-tier performance, and premium in-cabin experience. If priced competitively, the YU7 could become a best-seller in the Chinese EV market and set the stage for Xiaomi’s global ambitions. It not only outperforms key rivals like the Tesla Model Y in several parameters but also offers features that are rarely seen in this segment.
