100% Road Tax Waiver on Hybrids: How?

A Toyota dealer in the Delhi NCR region is offering a 100% road tax waiver on strong hybrid cars, making them significantly cheaper. The dealership, Espirit Toyota, has been promoting this unique offer with the slogan, “Drive Hybrid, Support Environment and Save Big,” generating a lot of attention on social media.

Espirit Toyota claims that this 100% road tax waiver can make the Camry executive sedan up to Rs 4.4 lakh cheaper, the Innova Hycross up to Rs 3.1 lakh cheaper, and the Hyryder up to Rs 2 lakh cheaper. However, this offer does not extend to the Toyota Vellfire, another strong hybrid vehicle.

There is a specific condition: the 100% road tax waiver applies only to registrations in the state of Uttar Pradesh. This suggests that the Uttar Pradesh state government has introduced a scheme to promote strong hybrid car sales. Additionally, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has been advocating for a reduction in GST for strong hybrid vehicles from the current 45% to 12%. If implemented, this would be a nationwide policy, unlike the current state-specific road tax waiver. However, there have been no discussions yet about waiving road tax for strong hybrid vehicles at the national level.
