Skoda plans to reintroduce the diesel powered cars for the Indian Market starting with the upcoming next-generation Superb sedan. Petr Janeba, Head of International Sales at Skoda Auto, confirmed this development during the announcement of the brand’s upcoming compact SUV.
Skoda Superb with Diesel: All Details!
Last year, Skoda silently halted the Superb’s availability in India as the country transitioned to BS6 stage-2 emission norms. In its current strategy to reenter the Indian market with diesel-powered Superb models, Skoda plans to import them via the CBU (Completely Built-Up) route. The anticipated arrival of the first batch is expected later this year.
During the shift from BS4 to BS6 norms, Skoda opted to discontinue their diesel engine lineup, believing the automotive industry was moving away from diesel-powered vehicles. However, recognizing the persistent demand for diesel cars, especially in the SUV segment, the brand aims to meet consumer preferences by reintroducing diesel engine options, initially limited to its flagship sedan by late 2024.
The 2024 Superb made its global debut in November of the previous year. While international markets offer six engine options, including petrol, diesel, and PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) variants, the Indian market is likely to see two engine choices: a locally manufactured 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit and a fully-imported diesel trim. This strategic move aligns with Skoda’s ‘India 2.0’ strategy, reflecting the brand’s commitment to catering to diverse consumer preferences in the Indian automotive market.
