Maruti’s Grand Vitara with Hybrid could be in trouble as this brand is looking to launch its new SUVs with Hybrid Powertrain!

Renault India is gearing up for the next phase of growth with a clear focus on a multi-fuel approach. While the brand has officially ruled out the return of diesel engines, it is actively investing in CNG and Ethanol. Alongside these, Renault is now evaluating strong hybrid systems and range-extender technology as part of its long-term roadmap.

Renault Evaluating Strong Hybrids, Rules Out Mild-Hybrids

The company is not considering mild-hybrid tech for India. According to Venkatram Mamillapalle, Managing Director & CEO of Renault India, “India is a multi-fuel, multi-strategy automotive landscape. Not everyone can invest in everything, so deciding which direction to take is crucial. We’re already present in CNG. As for hybrids, we’re exploring that, but it has to be meaningful. Mild-hybrids don’t make an impact.”

As of now, Renault is still studying hybrid options and range extender systems that use a small petrol engine to power an electric drivetrain. “We’re exploring it. I don’t have all the answers yet, I’m still learning,” Mamillapalle added. The company is also considering localising such technology in the future.

Hybrid Duster and Bigster Planned for India

Sources reveal that Renault is working to introduce strong hybrid options for the upcoming Duster and its 7-seater sibling, the Bigster. The aim is to roll out hybrid variants in the same year as the petrol versions, though exact launch timelines are yet to be confirmed.

Internationally, the new-generation Duster is already offered with both mild-hybrid and strong-hybrid options. The mild-hybrid version gets a 130hp, 1.2L turbo-petrol engine paired with a 48V starter motor. Meanwhile, the strong-hybrid variant features a 1.6L petrol engine and two electric motors—one producing 49hp and another working as a starter generator—powered by a 1.2kWh battery pack. This setup generates a combined output of 140hp and comes with an electric automatic gearbox. Renault claims that this system can enable up to 80% of urban driving in pure electric mode.

It remains uncertain whether Renault will bring the exact same hybrid setup to India. The brand is reportedly still finalising plans based on local market demands and cost factors.

AWD and LPG Unlikely for India

While the international-spec Duster offers an LPG engine and 4×4 drivetrain, these options are unlikely to be launched in India. The previous-gen Duster was available with all-wheel drive, but the new model’s electric rear axle system may not be cost-efficient for our market.

Renault India’s hybrid strategy is still evolving, but it’s clear the brand is preparing to make a serious move into alternative powertrains to stay competitive in the fast-changing Indian automotive landscape.
