You’ve read the title right! The Polo is coming next year and could deliver range upto 400 KMs!

Volkswagen is gearing up to make a strong entry into the compact electric car segment with the production-ready ID.2, set to be unveiled at the IAA 2025 Motor Show. The EV is expected to officially go on sale in Europe by 2026 and could eventually make its way to India.

Volkswagen ID.2 Spotted in Polo Styling

The ID.2 is seen as a potential long-term replacement for the Volkswagen Polo. The current test prototype is heavily camouflaged and resembles the Polo in its proportions. However, the overall styling is expected to remain close to the previously showcased ID.2all concept. It will sport features like LED headlamps and hidden rear door handles, while retaining a familiar profile to help existing customers transition smoothly to electric.

While the global version of the ID.2 measures 4.05m in length, 1.81m in width, and 1.53m in height, the Indian version – if launched – is likely to be under 4 metres in length to gain tax benefits. This will allow Volkswagen to price it competitively in India’s growing EV hatchback space.

Interiors

Despite compact dimensions, the ID.2’s EV platform offers significantly better space management compared to ICE hatchbacks. Volkswagen claims that the ID.2 will have more cabin space than the Polo and even a boot capacity of up to 1,330 litres—more than what’s offered in the larger Golf.

One of the biggest complaints with current-gen Volkswagen EVs like the ID.3 and Golf 8 has been the reliance on touch sliders. However, the ID.2 is expected to return to physical controls for frequently used functions, which will improve user experience.

Battery and Range

The ID.2 is expected to come with battery options ranging from 40kWh to 55kWh, offering a claimed range of up to 400km on a single charge (WLTP). In India, a locally sourced or smaller capacity battery may be offered to reduce costs, but still deliver a practical real-world range.

In Europe, the price is expected to start around €25,000 (approx. Rs. 25 lakh). However, if it launched in India, expect Volkswagen to launch it through the CBU Route which would mean the price could go as high as in the range of Rs. 40 – 50 Lakhs.

Final Thoughts

The Volkswagen ID.2 is shaping up to be a game-changer in the affordable EV hatchback segment. With its smart design, spacious interior, physical controls, and respectable range, it has the potential to win over both European and Indian buyers.
