Bharat NCAP New Safety Label: All Details!
New cars tested under the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) will soon feature a safetythat displays their safety ratings. Bharat NCAP has unveiled the design of this new label, which will be provided to car manufacturers after completing the crash test results. The safety label will clearly indicate the safety rating for the specific model and variant, along with the test date (month and year), and separate ratings for adult and child occupant safety.
This initiative is designed to help customers make more informed decisions when purchasing a new car. While participation in Bharat NCAP is currently voluntary for passenger vehicle manufacturers, meaning not all vehicles will have a safety label, those that are tested will display it. Additionally, the label will include a QR code that provides access to a detailed crash test report, offering more insights beyond the star ratings.
About Bharat NCAP
Bharat NCAP, launched in October 2023, started its journey by testing the facelifted versions of the Tata Harrier and Safari. As expected, both models achieved a 5-star safety rating. Since then, manufacturers have been submitting their cars for crash testing, with Tata Motors leading the way. So far, four of its models—the Harrier, Safari, Nexon EV, and Punch EV—have all received 5-star ratings. Cars from Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai have also been sent for testing, and results are eagerly anticipated.
To secure at least a 3-star rating under Bharat NCAP, every car tested must be equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as a standard feature. The assessment program is based on the updated norms of Global NCAP and Euro NCAP protocols, tailored for voluntary testing under the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. Additionally, Bharat NCAP has the authority to randomly select and test cars, whether locally manufactured or imported, to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Verdict
The introduction of the Bharat NCAP safety label marks a significant step forward in promoting road safety in India. This initiative empowers consumers with critical information about a vehicle’s safety performance, allowing for more informed purchasing decisions. Although participation in Bharat NCAP is currently voluntary, the visibility of safety ratings on tested vehicles is expected to drive higher safety standards across the automotive industry.
With the inclusion of a QR code for detailed crash test reports, Bharat NCAP is not just raising awareness but also enhancing transparency in vehicle safety. As more manufacturers participate, this program could become a key factor in shaping consumer preferences and, ultimately, the safety landscape of Indian roads.
